What would you do if you were asked to say how powerful a cup of tea is? According to The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a cup of tea can be extremely important. The theme the power of a cup of tea focuses on the fact that we should never judge something based on its superficial image or stereotype. Such idea is shown in the section by the importance that is given to tea, and by the fact that it was a student who discovered the dreamed infinite improbability drive. In the fragment, there is a constant use of scientific jargon in the description of the improbability drive. Many complicated and ‘sophisticated’ names are used, and the audience truly gets the sense of something hi-tech. However, after we see that the ‘Brownian motion producer’ is actually just a cup of tea, everything changes and all the jargon just turns into absurdity and comedy. This transformation of impressions causes us to see that our views of the world change completely depending on how we think or imagine what is around us. When we think of a Brownian motion producer, there is nothing funny, but when it is a cup of tea, everything changes. In addition, the existence of the theme can be easily identified if we consider that a cup of tea is needed for such an incredible machine to work. Something that may seem inoffensive can actually be of great relevance and influence. The fact that it was a student who discovered the infinite improbability drive also contributes to the existence of the theme the power of a cup of tea. The report about the discovery of this fantastic machine is filled with irony from head to toe. From the point that the student was just cleaning the rests of a party to the complete logical fallacy in the explanation of the idea of the invention, everything is just ironic and absurd. We are again able to perceive that even if something looks ridiculous or informal, it does not mean that it is insignificant or pointless. The theme the power of a cup of tea is clearly present in The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The author effectively transmits his ideas and at the end we all know that we should never judge a cup of tea for its color.

In this section the theme appears in two main ways, and in both cases, it shows how small and apparently insignificant things may be important.

Example 1 – Tea is a necessary part of the improbability drive

Tea is the main motif that exposes this theme and that also works as a way to connect to the audience of the radio play. In this case, there is the use of jargon and absurdity to create comedy and surprise. With that and the mixture of tea with all the other scientific instruments, we see that small and seemingly unimportant things may be extremely powerful.

Example 2 – It is a student who finds the improbability drive

After the physicists having declared that it was something impossible, a mere student finds a way to build it. This clearly shows how things that look insignificant can actually make huge changes in the world. Produces irony and absurdity

Conclusion

From a relatively small section of the book The hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy it was possible to observe three of the main themes that are present in the story. The power of a cup of tea appears as a major theme in the section and it clearly exposes the idea that things that may seem insignificant can actually be extremely important. Such subject is shown by the necessity of a cup of hot tea as a crucial part of the highly technological improbability drive, and by the discovery made by a mere student regarding the dreamed infinite improbability drive. The probability of the improbable is also shown by the student’s discovery and the only difference regards the use of logical fallacy to demonstrate the improbability and ridiculousness of the discovery. The fact that the physicists hated smartasses works ensuring the theme and creating an enormous irony concerning the common image of physicists (as smartasses). And finally, the universe of cool and uncool refers to the separation of the different characters as cool or uncool depending on their stereotypes and images. In the section, it is exposed by the physicists, who have a strong image of uncool tied to them. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy expresses many different ideas, and even in a small piece of text, it is possible to find various examples of these concepts and themes.
