During class, we watched a movie and had a discussion about how companies try to influence teenagers to buy their products. We saw that many research techniques are used to try understanding and predicting what is considered cool. It lets the companies know how they should design their products and advertisements to work more effectively with this specific age group.
After that, we were asked to talk to our parents about what was ‘cool’ when they were teenagers and where they think this concept came from.
In my parents’ opinion, the idea of ‘cool’ started to be more considered by people particularly during the 20th century. With globalization, companies started to advertise more and more and, as a result, the idea of ‘cool things’ increased proportionally to the consumerism. According to my parents, when they were teenagers the cool things were from brands such as Levi’s, Lee and, Adidas. The people that they found the coolest were John Travolta and other Brazilian artists that had TV shows about discos and independence from parents.
